Making a big splash in small tributaries...

In-stream implementation at West Fork Trail Creek RM 1.5 wrapped up in 2025. Construction crews worked alongside our staff to strategically place large wood at 12 different locations throughout the mainstem and side channels along this half-mile reach. A total of roughly 80 pieces of wood were placed, sourced from both on-site locations and supplemented by the contractor's off-site source.

While the channel is intermittently dry in the summer, these structures will interact with winter and spring flows, helping to store and spread water, sort substrates, and create habitat. Scroll to see pictures from the winter of 2025/2026 and how these structures are already improving habitat!

Large wood structures make our rivers healthier. From reducing the power of erosion in flooding events to providing cover from predators for juvenile fish, large wood is essential to our streams.
