Unlocking the river's nursery...

Two undersized culverts are no longer a problem for juvenile fish in the Trail Creek watershed. During the winter months when flow is high, the "firehose" effect pushes fish downstream. In the summer when water levels are low, a "lip" becomes evident between the bottom of the culvert and the surface of the creek, making passage for juvenile fish nearly impossible.

This project upgraded these culverts to bridges, making a long term solution for both the existing road and aquatic wildlife. Click through the gallery to see the project story in visual form.

Existing cold-water creeks high up in the watershed provide excellent rearing habitat for juvenile salmonoids. Trail Creek is identified as a priority watershed in the Upper Rogue Coho Strategic Action Plan because of its high potential for restoration, and we are continuing to build on it with projects downstream.
