Benefiting Farmers & Wildlife

We worked with a private landowner to improve water quality and fish passage by placing large wood, recovering the native riparian forest, and improving irrigation water diversion infrastructure.

One of the major instream actions was to install an irrigation system that does not require the landowner to rely on a push-up dam for water diversion. The annual construction and deconstruction of the push-up dam impedes fish passage for much of the year and disrupts Chinook Salmon spawning every fall. In conjunction with piping, we relocated the intake and fish screen closer to the point of diversion. This will eliminate the need for a push-up dam during irrigation season and greatly reduce the risk of fish stranding in the ditch.

Little Butte Creek is water quality limited for a variety of factors including sedimentation, bacteria, pH, and temperature. These issues that are magnified at low flows (like summer/irrigation season).

Water quality impacts local recreation in the creek,
drinking water, aquatic life, and agriculture.
